Definition
Under supervision, to assist classroom teachers in the instructional programs for children who attend a California School for the Deaf; to assist in the preparation of teaching materials, record keeping, and the operation of classroom equipment; to assist in the guidance of recreation and crafts activities; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Assists the teacher in the conduct of lessons and other classroom activities, including program and curriculum presentation to students, administration and correction of tests, and related classroom activities; tutors students; operates classroom equipment; assists in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials; keeps routine records; grades objective examinations; attends to children's physical needs in the classroom; assists in supervising children on campus and on educational field trips; confers as needed with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs; and files and stores materials as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
Sign Language Requirement: Proficiency in the use of American Sign Language. and Education: Completion of high school or equivalent.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Child guidance principles; personal and social problems of children; principles and techniques of directing children's group activities.
Ability to: Communicate effectively at a level necessary for successful job performance; perform basic mathematical computations; operate classroom equipment; assist with supervising the learning activities for physically and/or mentally disabled, emotionally disturbed, and/or multiple-handicapped children; follow directions; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; keep records and prepare reports.
Special Personal Characteristics
Demonstrated interest in working with deaf children and/or multiple- handicapped children; sympathetic and objective understanding of the problems of disabled children; and emotional stability.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Completion of college level work in basic education or special education instruction; experience working with deaf children; fluency in a language other than English; and possession of a valid driver license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
