Definition
Under direction, to operate, navigate, and maintain a self-propelled ferry of the State highway system; to direct the loading and unloading of vehicles and passengers; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Operates a self-propelled ferry of the State highway system on a navigable slough or river; ascertains that ferry is secured to slips before vehicles enter or leave the ferry; directs the loading and unloading of passengers and vehicles; maintains a traffic count of all vehicles crossing the ferry; observes prescribed safety rules, regulations, and marine laws applicable to the operation of a ferry on inland waterways; operates, maintains and services ferryboat engines, controls, and equipment; services marine and roadway lights on ferry and ferry approaches; maintains cooperative public relations; prepares regular and special reports on the operation and condition of the ferry and of unusual incidents or accidents; performs or oversees the performance of minor work on the hull or superstructures of the vessel.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid U.S. Coast Guard license to operate mechanically propelled vessels of at least 63 gross tons carrying more than six passengers on other than ocean or coast-wise waters.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Rules of the United States Department of Defense, Department of Commerce, and Coast Guard governing the operation and navigation of vessels in inland waters; operation of self-propelled ferries and ferryboat equipment; uses of fuels, lubricants, supplies and equipment on a motor vessel; marine signaling systems; and basic occupational safety and health work practices to protect their own safety and health and that of others.
Ability to: Service and make minor repairs to propulsion engines, control mechanisms, and auxiliary marine equipment; service marine and roadway lights; maintain cooperative relations with the traveling public; keep simple records and make traffic counts; oversee the work of deck assistants and act in a lead capacity; prepare clear and concise reports, including the description of accidents and unusual incidents; analyze situations accurately, and take effective action.

Drug Testing Requirement
Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
