Definition

Under supervision, to perform technical work in writing, editing, and publishing departmental publications and articles; to assist in the preparation and dissemination of news stories regarding departmental activity; and to do other related work.

Distinguishing Characteristics

An Editorial Technician is differentiated from the lower level class of Editorial Aid by the degree of his/her independent responsibility for original writing and preparation of journals, pamphlets, and brochures for publication. An Editorial Aid typically has limited responsibility for original writing and works under closer supervision in editing, laying out, and preparing materials for publication.

 

An Editorial Technician, in a training or permanent working level capacity, is differentiated from the next higher level of Assistant Information Officer by the degree of independence with which he/she works and by the nature of his/her assignments. As a journeyperson writer in a broader capacity, an Assistant Information Officer writes copy for news releases and material to be broadcast on radio and/or television; conducts research in the preparation of news releases, articles and speeches; and distributes news releases and other information material through publicity channels, such as newspapers, news services, periodicals, radio and television.

Typical Tasks

Writes copy for brochures, pamphlets, and other departmental journals; conducts research in the preparation of brochures, pamphlets and other depart- mental written materials; confers with departmental staff members and assists them in the preparation of assigned articles; gathers information and assists in preparation of news releases of departmental activities; makes up pages and prepares layouts for printing.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college, preferably with a major in journalism, public relations, English, or a closely related field. Registration as a senior in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation or its equivalent before they can be considered eligible for appointment.

Or II

 

Experience: Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of an Editorial Aid. and

 

Education: Equivalent to completion of two years of college, preferably with course work in journalism, public relations, or English. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Techniques of writing, editing, and preparing articles for publication; modern English usage, grammar, and spelling.

 

Ability to: Write effectively and creatively; edit and prepare articles for publication; research articles and analyze data accurately.

Special Personal Characteristics

High interest in the field of public information work; originality and creativeness; ability to gain and hold the confidence and respect of those contacted in the work; and ability to assume increasing responsibility.
